  • Meet the Author: Kristin Melton
  • This quarter we're highlighting associate attorney, Kristin Melton, author of Impact of the NCAA Division I Autonomy Governance Model on Student-Athletes. Kristin joined de la Parte & Gilbert in 2007 after graduating cum laude from the University Of Florida Levin College Of Law. Her primary practice areas include government, administrative, environmental and water law. Q. Where did you grow up and what was it like?

    A. Jupiter, Florida. It is an amazing, small beach town about 20 minutes north of West Palm Beach. I spent as much time as possible boating and at the beach.

    Q. What was your first paid job?

    A. Babysitting – One of my first clients is now the kicker for the Philadelphia Eagles!

    Q. What's the most personal thing in your office and why is it there?

    A. Besides photos of my family, a Chris Leak autographed 2006 Gators National Championship helmet. It brings back fond memories of one of my favorite years in Gainesville.

    Q. Who are your heroes and why?

    A. The men and women who fight every day to defend our country. Without their sacrifice, I would not be able to enjoy the freedoms and opportunities that we so often take for granted.

    Q. Where do you like to vacation?

    A. I just had a wonderful vacation over the summer in Deer Valley, Utah. It’s great to experience different landscapes and weather! Colorado and Utah in the summer are the perfect escape from the Florida heat.

    Q. If you could visit for an hour with one person you've never met, who would it be and why?

    A. Tim Tebow. He is such a positive person and I would love to hear about his life experiences.

    Q. Where are you most Saturday mornings?

    A. At the gym, watching College GameDay.

    Q. What advice would you give to a new lawyer starting out?

    A. Most of what you learned in school and on the bar has limited relevance to actually practicing law. Take advantage of any opportunity to learn from experienced attorneys in your firm.
