Operation Visit Uganda with Richard Gilbert
Last summer, I had the opportunity to travel to Uganda to visit my brother and his wife. Mike and Deb began One City Ministries in Uganda 4 years ago. I traveled the 7,500 miles to become educated on the various aspects of One City Ministries’ projects, activities, and missions so to better serve as an ambassador for One City Ministries in the Tampa Bay area. One of the main projects that One City Ministries has been striving to achieve is “The Light Village.” Once completed and fully operational, this village will be 100% self-sustaining. The Light Village will generate income through its various projects; including selling Light Fuel, an environmentally sound, clean burning fuel, which will prove a clean alternative to wood and charcoal; its Aquaponic tilapia farm; bee keeping facilities; and poultry farming. These projects, contained within the Light Village, are designated to completely support an orphanage for 80 children, a primary school, a family health and women’s clinic, a church, and a vocational training center.

After just four years of operation, One City Ministries has met its goal to operate efficiently and with fiscal responsibility. One City Ministries has reached a point where 100% of its administrative overhead is funded and paid for out of its own economic development practices. Practices that not only help fund their ministry but help its widows, orphans, and One City artisans enjoy an independent livelihood.
